Mission Style Computer Desk
As I type this blog entry, I'm typing at the desk pictured to the left.
I've been living with
this desk
for about ten months and I've definitely formed some opinions about it... some good, some not so good.
Initially, I purchased this desk for two reasons:
- I'm a mission-style furniture freak;
- As desks go, it was quite inexpensive... some would say "cheap".
The desk looks super and is relatively easy to construct. It's also easy to clean and spills don't seem to stain. With two climbing cats and my tendency to leave half-filled Diet Coke cans sitting about, I've tested this feature on numerous occasions.
The wide keyboard tray has plenty of room for keyboard, mouse, and wrist-rest... and let me tell you, unless you're Miss Mavis Beacon herself and have perfect typing form, you're going to want a wrist-rest. Take a look at the inset in the picture above. See that raised edge on the keyboard tray? What were they THINKING? This is my biggest complaint about the desk -- a relaxed typing style and the wrist pain is killer.
That said, I got a nice gel wrist-rest and that solved THAT problem.
But one more... I wouldn't recommend this desk for someone with an old-style 21" inch monitor -- you know the ones that way about 2.3 tons and stick out for a mile in the back? Oh, there's plenty of room on the desktop for it (and that IS nice), but it in all honesty, the monitor is just too heavy for the desk. My desk has a definite dip in the top and if I nudge the desk, the weight of the monitor keeps it from budging -- except for the fact that the mission-style side slats fall out... at which point I begin to fear being crushed under the weight of a collapsing desk with a 2.3 ton monitor on it.
All-in-all, I still believe this desk is a decent deal for the price. I'd buy it again if, and only if, I had a smaller monitor.
Price: $89.99 (at the time of this writing)
